Ingredients

  • 12 lasagna noodles (uncooked or oven-ready)
  • 1 lb (450g) ground Italian sausage or ground beef
  • 2 cups marinara sauce
  • 2 cups ricotta cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 cups fresh spinach leaves, chopped
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Olive oil, for sautéing
  • Optional: Fresh basil leaves for garnish

Instructions

1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Ingredients

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). If using traditional lasagna noodles, cook according to package instructions until al dente, then drain. Set aside.

2. Cook the Meat

In a large skillet, heat a drizzle of olive oil over medium heat. Add the ground sausage or beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain any excess fat.

3. Prepare the Cheese Mixture

In a medium bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, garlic powder, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and black pepper. Mix until smooth.

4. Layer the Lasagna

  • Spread a thin layer of marinara sauce on the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  • Layer 4 lasagna noodles over the sauce.
  • Spread half of the ricotta mixture over the noodles.
  • Add half of the cooked meat, half of the chopped spinach, and a layer of mozzarella.
  • Repeat layers: noodles, ricotta, meat, spinach, mozzarella.
  • Top with remaining noodles, marinara sauce, mozzarella, and Parmesan cheese.

5. Bake

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15–20 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

6. Cool and Serve

Allow the lasagna to rest for 10–15 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired. Serve warm for a festive, comforting holiday meal.

Tips for Success

  • Use oven-ready noodles for a quicker assembly.
  • Fresh spinach can be lightly sautéed before layering if preferred.
  • For extra flavor, add roasted red peppers or sautéed mushrooms between layers.
  • Lasagna can be assembled a day in advance and baked before serving for convenience.

Serving Ideas

  • Pair with a crisp green salad and garlic bread for a complete holiday meal.
  • Serve with a glass of sparkling apple cider or non-alcoholic punch for family-friendly gatherings.
