Cake Layer
  • 1 cup sponge cake cubes
Jelly Layer
  • 1 package flavored gelatin prepared as directed
Custard Layer
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 tbsp cornstarch
  • 4 egg yolks large
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
Fruit Layer
  • 1 cup mixed berries
Whipped Cream Layer
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Optional Magical Touch
  • chocolate shavings, sprinkles, or edible glitter

Method
 

  1. Prepare jelly according to package instructions, chill until set, cut into cubes.
  2. Make custard: heat milk, whisk egg yolks, sugar, cornstarch. Combine and cook until thickened. Add vanilla. Cool slightly.
  3. Whip cream with powdered sugar and vanilla until soft peaks form.
  4. Layer in trifle bowl or cups: cake cubes, jelly cubes, custard, fruit, whipped cream. Repeat as desired.
  5. Decorate with chocolate shavings, sprinkles, or edible glitter.
  6. Chill at least 2 hours before serving.
  7. Serve chilled and enjoy the whimsical layers.
